Since creative activity is often associated with "those with surplus time and resources," political prisoners who dedicate their labor to outcomes unrelated to survival might seem to waste their time and strength. Yet, the deprivation of social roles, the coercion of total authority, and the abolition of existing orders all contribute to an intense need to establish an alternative order of one’s own. The semi-artistic practices performed by political prisoners can be seen as an attempt to reclaim or redeem their “normal lives.” Chang Wen-Hsuan selected five objects created by political prisoners: CHEN Meng-he's handmade violin, HUANG Guang-hai's terrestrial globe, HU Hsin-lin's planisphere, WU Shui-teng's paper photo frame, and CHEN Meng-he's oil painting Overlook at New Life Correction Center (2002), along with the model he supervised. By highlighting the distinctions between archival and art photography, she invites the audience to reflect on the interplay between creative activity, everyday life, and restricted autonomy. New Order is an ongoing project launched by Chang Wen-Hsuan in 2023. Using the structure of a filing system, this long-term project explores the dichotomous manipulation of the “new order” narrative. The work featured in the art festival is filed under "Normal Life."
